I can't believe it's only been one month since Haruki became my room mate! It feels like he's been with me for much longer. Since he recovered from his little bout of not eating and the syringe feedings & anti-nausea meds, he's blossomed into a playful, curious, happy, healthy & contented guy. He makes me laugh daily, hiding behind furniture and then jumping out to scare me. Thanks to everyone at SRC for the great work you do and for being my kitty matchmaker!

Greetings! And happy six-month anniversary to Haruki and me indeed! I still find it hard to believe we've only been together 6 months. No lies, there have been some growing pains -- or boundary testing, to be more exact -- but very few of these. The majority of the time, Haruki is sweet, mellow, well-adjusted and ready to meet anyone who walks in my door. A highlight was Christmas. He flew without any issues with me to visit family, adjusted to his new surroundings in less than 24 hours and made sure to wish everyone he met a happy holiday. On Christmas Eve, he lay in the middle of family & friends as we unwrapped gifts, playing with wrapping paper and just generally enjoying himself. Needless to say, I'm completely smitten. I've attached a picture of Haruki assuming his favorite position.

I'm a little delayed in providing you with our "First Cativersary" update since Haruki and I were busy moving into a new home. He's settled in beautifully (as you can tell from the attached photo), which is more than I can say for myself (I'm still unpacking and moving furniture around!). He's been such a dream boy and charms everyone he meets. I really couldn't ask for a better companion!

Nate met his new vet, Dr. Michael Haney of Cocoa Veterinary Hospital, yesterday and was a complete charmer during his wellness exam. He did sneak out and tour the back a little bit, but let Dr. Haney pick him up and bring him back to the exam room. He weighed slightly over 9 lbs (consistent with his weight two weeks ago) and was judged to be in overall good health. Dr. Haney noted the heart murmur but said he had a good strong pulse. His back molars could use a cleaning, but that will be coordinated with the repeat EKG requested in 6 months or so. His ears have something and Dr. Haney sent us home with Entederm and instructions to use it every two days or so. He also has a raw spot/sore on his jaw maybe caused by scratching a back tooth that may bother him. That is to be treated a couple times a day.
Nate alternated between panting with his mouth open and seeming unstressed until he just seemed to collapse in relaxation on the exam table. He was comfortable with everyone and delightfully snuggly with me, seeming to take comfort in my proximity.
Not a fan of car rides, Nate was very vocal on the way home, but held no grudge as he exited his carrier and jumped on his window seat for the afternoon.
Although he is not to engage in much activity, right now it's up to Nate, and he does enjoy periodically dashing around the house. It's impressive with the tile floors! He hasn't deigned to use his new cat tower except to recover treats that I hide in it. He plays enthusiastically with his toys, especially a catnip carrot and the wand from Donna, but his completely self-sufficient. When I try to play he walks away ;)
Nate sleeps with me at least part of every night and his biting seems to be an odd attempt to play. Sometimes it just comes out of the blue. Most of the time I can tell when he's done being petted and stop before he reaches out.
I think that's about it ... we're doing really well. I have posted photos of His Nateness on my FB page, etschumacher, and will try to upload here in time.

Just uploaded some photos of Nate around the house. The injunction about food, I learned, extends to treats. I thought I was pretty cat-educated, but didn't think to check that "duck flavored" treats contained only save ingredients. Nate is a few bare spots on his neck, ears, and one leg. I am mortified. Not sharing THOSE images. But I have found single-ingredient treats and will purchase along with his specific food this month.
The period dashing around the house has increased to regular activity. It's a little silly, since the floors are tile, but he does manage to build up some momentum and I stay OUT of his way. Interestingly, I haven't heard coughing (heart murmur-related) in the last week. He has even started playing with a wand toy when I'm holding it.
Don't know what the deal is about biting, but he doesn't do it when I put ointment on his sores or clean ears. He sits quietly and then dashes away when let go. In fact, that's why I wanted to give him treats, as a reward. Ha. Nate really does love his food and I am feeding a quarter can per meal, which is a little more than instructed.
The photo that is really close up of his face is the result of me taking a photo to show Donna that Nate has decided to be a lap cat. On his own terms, of course, but there we are.
He's pretty much perfect. He's started to let me comb him (with a flea comb, very lightly, just to help his coat) and I think he is happy here. I am VERY happy he is here!

I tried to send an update and add photos, but something didn't work right.
Nate hates to be combed but loves to "play-fight with the hand" ... it's aggressive, but not mean. So, I humor him until the blood starts dripping. He is a perfect gentleman for medicine, so I think it's a fair trade.
Nate is very active and scrambles all around the tile floor, over furniture, around the rugs ... the house is his domain. Donna said he didn't talk much to her, but now he chatters and grumbles all the time. He talks to the birds, the lizards, to me, and to his food. Lots of opinions to share.
He went to the vet for a case of bad breath (which I noticed via the biting events) ... vet cleaned his gums a bit but doesn't want to sedate for a full cleaning. He checked the heart and couldn't find a murmur, so maybe after a cardiac exam, we'll explore options. Otherwise, the picture of fine health.

Nate's latest EKG last month was good, but he remained very skinny. Cardiologist recommended an ultrasound and shortly after that appointment, Nate's abdomen filled with fluid. The ultrasound showed three growths on his liver. 700 ml of fluid was drained and we went home content. However, within a few days he abdomen filled again. He was uncomfortable even with subq fluids, cerenia, and gabapentin and struggled in the litterbox. Made difficult decision to euthanize on Tuesday afternoon, 2 August. Thanks everyone who helped bring him into my life.

Notes from Home
Hello My name is Dixie, Someone tried to call me Rebecca but I would never answer to that name. I had a rough first couple of weeks at my new home back in June. I still had worms and I had sharp claws. My new Meomy and daddy took me to the vet the first week to get me checked out and oh that did not go well. I was ready for blood. I wasn't sure what was going on since I was in a new place and I didn't know what was going to happen to me and these new people. I had to be restrained as I was going ferral on them. I got a shot and my nails clipped. I was put back in my transport carrier and I just sat there. My new Meomy and daddy took me back home and all was forgiven. This must be my new forever home. I really like it here. I'm allowed to go anywhere I want. I can explore, hide, jump out and play. I don't like to play with the balls that they toss, but I love to chase around those cloth mice. It reminds me of when I was on my own. I also like the wand toy that has feathers on it, that reminds me of the birds that I chased. Wow this place is nice, I have a tree to climb on and look out the window. I also love to lay on the bed in the back of the house, I claim that as my own!
I think that I'm going to like it here. Now that I know that this is home, I have settled right in. Now I just need to train my new Meomy and daddy about what I want. I get over stimulated very fast and only like to be held for a short time, my daddy is working with me to help me feel comfortable and that is a work in progress. I like to be held, just not too long. I can tell that this is a safe place for me.

Hi Everybody! I've been in my fur-ever home a little over a week. I got to see my new big sister when I first got here before the door closed but that was about it. Human spent several hours in the room with me and I jumped up in her lap and we got to bond. I had to spend the first night alone in a room all by myself, I didn't like that. Big Sister, Mieka, came to the door and we knew each other was on the other side of the door. Morning finally came and I got to make a fuss to get out of the room and when the door opened, out I flew. I didn't explore too much but down the hall and to the kitchen. By the time we should go to bed that night I ran for the bed - and made myself comfortable and stayed. When the next morning arrived, Mieka and I were both on the bed with human...one situation under complete control. Human has started feeding me then putting me in a room and closing the door - she calls me a thief and keeps telling me to stop eating sister's food. I guess after being out in the wild for a bit I learned to forge for food and my gentlemanly manners around food need some work. I still am UN-impressed with the garage so my litter box is still in the house. Mieka lets me wash her head and doesn't run away very often, but she is a female and changes her mind frequently, but doesn't hiss or anything. Human was going to post pictures but she lost them on the computer...maybe I should learn to use it...maybe not because I didn't much care for YouTube. Hey Ya'll
Three weeks tomorrow in my fur-ever home. Seems like a lot longer - like always! Things are going fine and Mieka and I are doing fine and starting to play a little bit and I am really good about washing her head - over and over.
I visited the vet yesterday and I was a very good boy and friendly to everybody. I still had a bit of wax in my left ear so I got some stuff for that after Dr Andy cleaned it out, which I didn't care for but didn't fight. I also got some stuff for that spot on my tail. I weight 10 lbs and if I get my way I'll up that real quick because I'm still stealing sister's food every chance I get.
I sleep on human's arm every night and with every time she moves an inch I take two and she says I will need to sleep elsewhere because I'm pushing her off the bed! I just want to snuggle. The garage is a place of wonder...I wonder what I can get into next. Human wasn't happy when I got up on work bench and knocked down the tools hanging on the wall - especially the saws! I didn't hurt them but she said they could hurt me, so I guess I'll not get up there again soon. That's about all for now, except I like it here and I like my human and Mieka.

Two months here and stuck like glue! Really, I'm joined at the hip with mom...she moves, I move. I RULE! Sister, Mieka, and I play chase and have tons of toys to leave all over the floor for mom to step on. We really like the big cardboard box the vac came in. It still has the end flaps so we close each other up in it and sometimes bat toys around inside it for extra noise. I have gotten acquainted with the garage and there are some shelves I get on even if I'm not supposed to. I get yelled at a lot at eating times, because I inhale mine and go after what is in Mieka's bowl...mom says that's bad behavior and usually picks me up and takes me to the office with her and shuts the door so sister can eat. I guess being out in the world and having to find food when and where I could taught me a bad habit, but it's my only bad habit. I'm a real love bug and just can't get or give enough affection. I'm a lap cat for sure, I found mom's lap my first night here and now she has to put me down in order to get anything done. I sleep on her arm at night (not spoiled, just protecting her). Lots of pictures as soon as they get to computer for uploading.

MIEKA
My name is Mieka. (By the way I pronounce it Mi - Ka before you ask)
My foster mom says it means new moon, which is just like the color of my coat. A beautiful pale gray and blue. I just arrived and am slowly getting used to my new home. Mom says that I am a very pretty girl with the largest and most beautiful eyes in a meezer she has ever seen. Thanks Mom, but I knew that already! I flew here on a plane from California, boy that was a long way. Next on my kitty list of things to do is to tell her all about my likes and dislikes. Not sure there will be many, because I really am a very laid back kind of girl. Mum did say that I might have gained a few pounds over the winter, but hey, what gal didn't, that's what I say.
I would love to find a quieter home with another well mannered cat, like me, to talk to and hang out with. I must admit that I am a little shy when meeting new people, but warm up after a while. Mum says I have a small meow, so I have been practicing making it louder, but so far no luck. I have traveled back to the East Coast recently, but I would really like to put my pawsport away now, unpack my cat carrier and find a home, with a lap to sit on, that will love and look after me fur-ever.

My Human made me go to that awful place today! I was very talkative and LOUD in the car and at the Vet! I'm still a bid out of sorts. They are nice people but I didn't like it. Human just said to deal with it because nothing bad was going to happen...I still had a lot to say - more than I have said since I have been here. Mom Jane, I've lost 2 lbs already!! I'll be slim & trim by the time my new brother arrives next week. I like running but human won't chase me all over just down the hallway...when Chang (changed Clint's name) arrives we can run all over and under furniture and over it and all the fun stuff Human won't do!

Hi! I’ve been in my forever home for a week and already in complete control. I have run of the house and have found playing chase is fun. I don’t have a favorite toy because I have lots of toys, so many I have not gotten to all of them yet. I have pet beds and pillows in almost every room, I’m liking this!
I don’t like being picked up and not ready to be a lap cat, but if it means getting a treat I’ll jump onto a lap, grab the treat and jump down.
I love getting pets and will turn every way but inside-out to get them. I especially like a tummy rub and back scratch at the same time, I jump on the bed and stretch out and meow to get them.
I have a Vet visit this week (not happy about that!) but I don’t have any problems so it should just be a look-see visit.
I was introduced to YouTube and that was FUN…I smacked at the screen and it changed from kittens to dogs and I even found human babies crying! Waiting to try it sometime when new mom is asleep!
I was shown the garage over the weekend, but I’m not ready to go out there yet…maybe by next weekend.
Pictures will be coming...as soon as I am still long enough to take one.

Hey!
All well at this end. I am used to Chang and we are starting to play and a few attempts at chase but not serious yet. I let him wash my head and he likes that.
I have established my place in the household. I am the morning alarm clock. I wake human and Chase up sometime between 10 and 11 am. We get food when we go to bed so there is no need for sun-up wake-ups. I start by jumping on the bed and running over to and over human's head and meow. Then I flop and roll over and over and beg for attention. After 10-15 minutes of scratches and belly rubs I remember why I'm there and tell human to feed us. It works like a charm. I'm also really good about when it is time for treats. My brother, Chang, still steals my food when he gets a chance but we're working on that.

Three months home. I have a little brother and we L-O-V-E to run wild through the house in the middle of the night. I'm a tease and pretend I want everyone to go to bed and once the house is quite I start a race and all hell breaks out! Mom bought a vacuum and can't discard the box because we play in it every day...do you know how loud a cardboard box can be at 3 AM??? Mom yells at us to not completely destroy the house, but we just keep going. I'm still not a lap cat and don't like being picked up. However, I get on the bed next to mom's pillow and beg for attention. I used to wake her up to feed me, now I get attention then go to sleep and sometimes we sleep in because brother, Chang, would rather sleep than get up so it is up to me to be the alarm clock. Mom says I'm going to have to go back on a diet because even will all my playing (chasing brother) I'm plump...I don't like the sound of that. The latest heat wave ran me out of the garage but today was a little bit cooler so I went back out there, but came back after just a little while. Lots of pictures but mom just has to get them on the computer for upload. I'm still very pretty and a sometimes diva. I like movements on the computer and television and understand enough to know if I step on the iPad correctly the pictures and sounds change.

KITTY

Isabelle is doing great! I've never met such a loving and playful cat! And at 12 years old, I didn't expect that. She is completely friendly to everyone she meets. Everyone loves her including people who don't necessarily like cats.
